Bill Drafted to Set Legal Framework for Mass Media Sector

Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday that the government is drafting a new legal framework that will safeguard the mass media operation that can be concluded, approved and implemented during the first months of 2018.

Christodoulides was speaking during a Conference on “Fake news: A phenomenon of manipulation in the modern world” that was organised in Nicosia by the European Parliament Information Office in Cyprus, the Cyprus News Agency, the Union of Cyprus Journalists, the Cyprus Radiotelevision Authority and the Cyprus Media Complaints Commission.

The Spokesman said that the bill related to the mass media aims at “forming a framework dealing with issues as journalist ethics, press freedom, news agencies and foreign agencies and media correspondents.

Furthermore, he said that the bill provides for establishing a journalists’ register and for press identities.  In this way Christodoulides said “we hope that we will have a comprehensive picture of the mass media and the employees who work there and we will deal to a certain extent with the existing problems.”

According to the Cyprus News Agency, the spokesman said that we must not have any illusions that whatever we do, there will always be room for fake news, extreme propaganda and conspiracy scenarios.

The spokesman said that probably the best answer to all these is a mature citizen and a mature, moderate behaviour by all those who participate in the public dialogue.

He also expressed the belief that the majority of the people of Cyprus fully recognise attempts to promote fake news.
